More Information

What is Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole comes under the drug classification of Proton Pump Inhibitors. It is a generic drug used to alleviate symptoms of Acid Reflux and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD). It is formulated with the active substance esomeprazole magnesium dihydrate, aimed at decreasing the production of stomach acid. Doing so, it reduces the likelihood of acid leaking into your oesophagus and helps lessen symptoms such as acid reflux or heartburn.

Sexually transmitted illnesses like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV are not prevented by Yasmin for you or your partner.

How Does Esomeprazole Work?

Esomeprazole functions by significantly lowering both the acidity and the quantity of acid generated in the stomach. It achieves this by inhibiting specific mechanisms located in the stomach's cell walls, known as the proton pump. This action interferes with the last steps of acid production. When the proton pump is successfully inhibited, the stomach produces less acid. As a result, it aids in managing acid reflux, excessive acidity, and certain types of ulcers.

How Do You Take Esomeprazole?

Always adhere to the directions given by your healthcare provider when using Esomeprazole. You may ingest your tablet at whichever time of day is most convenient for you, with or without food. However, if you're on Esomeprazole for the long haul, try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet as a whole, do not break, crush, or chew the medication.

If you find it difficult to swallow the tablets, they can be dissolved by mixing your dose in a glass of still water until they disintegrate and form a cloudy solution. Consume this solution within 30 minutes, ensuring it's thoroughly stirred before drinking. To make sure you consume all the medication, refill the glass halfway with water, swirl it around to rinse, and then drink the rest.

What Are the Doses of Esomeprazole?

Two dosages of Esomeprazole are offered for managing Acid Reflux symptoms: 20mg and 40mg. The specific amount of Esomeprazole you require will vary based on your condition and the effectiveness of the medication in controlling it.

Should there be damage to your oesophagus, the standard treatment involves taking one 40 mg tablet daily for four weeks, with the possibility of an additional four-week course if healing is incomplete. For cases where the oesophagus remains undamaged, the usual practice is to take up to 20mg of Esomeprazole daily as needed. If you believe your Acid Reflux symptoms are not adequately managed with your current dosage, it's important to consult your healthcare provider. They may decide to increase your dosage for a period of one to two months to determine if it provides better control.

Are There Any Side Effects with Esomeprazole?

Like any medication, Esomeprazole can lead to side effects, though not everyone will experience them. The most frequently observed side effects include:

  • Headaches.
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Benign stomach polyps.

Long-term use of Esomeprazole, particularly in high doses, may raise the risk of fractures in the wrist, spine, and hip, as well as cause low levels of magnesium in the blood (hypomagnesemia). If you have any worries while using Esomeprazole, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider.

There are also rare but more severe side effects to be aware of. Should you encounter any of the following, cease taking Esomeprazole and seek immediate medical assistance:

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or other parts of the body, skin rash, fainting, or trouble swallowing, indicating a possible severe allergic reaction.
  • Weakness and unusual bruising or easier bruising, possibly signalling a decrease in white blood cells or platelets.
  • Symptoms of liver issues, such as yellowing of the skin (jaundice), fatigue, and dark-coloured urine.
  • A sudden severe rash with blistering and peeling skin, even after weeks of use.

For a detailed list of Esomeprazole's side effects, consulting the patient information leaflet is recommended.

Can you Purchase Esomeprazole Over the Counter?

No, generic Esomeprazole is not available over the counter; a prescription is required to obtain it. However, Nexium, a brand-name version of Esomeprazole, can be purchased without a prescription. Nexium is only available in 10 mg and 20 mg doses. Therefore, if your symptoms are more intense, or if Nexium does not adequately manage them, generic Esomeprazole might be a more suitable choice.

Can You Drink Alcohol with Esomeprazole?

Alcohol consumption does not impact the effectiveness of Esomeprazole. Research indicates that in healthy volunteers, gastroesophageal reflux decreased by 93% following Esomeprazole use, in contrast to a placebo. Nonetheless, alcohol can cause your stomach to generate more acid than usual, which may aggravate the stomach lining and exacerbate GORD symptoms.
