More Information

What is Losec?

Losec, which contains the active substance omeprazole, lowers stomach acid levels. It comes in two varieties: capsules and MUPS tablets (multi-unit pellet system). The capsules discharge their active component in the stomach, where it acts to reduce acid production. On the other hand, MUPS tablets have the same active substance in tiny pellets, ensuring a more uniform distribution throughout the digestive tract. This allows it to start alleviating GORD symptoms more swiftly.

How Does Losec Work?

Your stomach lining is made up of cells equipped with proton pumps, which generate acid to digest food when you consume a meal. Omeprazole, the active component in Losec, falls under the category of 'proton pump inhibitors.' It regulates the acid produced by these proton pumps, thus diminishing the symptoms associated with GORD.

How Do You Take Losec?

Follow your doctor's directions when using Losec and make sure to read and comprehend the information leaflet included with the medication.

It is recommended to take Losec before breakfast.

The capsule must be swallowed whole with water, about half a glass. Avoid chewing or crushing the capsule since it contains coated pellets designed to prevent breakdown by stomach acid, which is crucial for the medication's effectiveness.

Should you or a child find it difficult to swallow the capsule whole, you can open it and directly swallow the contents with half a glass of water. Alternatively, you can mix the contents in a glass of still water, acidic fruit juice like orange juice, or apple sauce. Stir well before consuming and follow with a rinse of the glass with more water to ensure you take the entire dose. The solid pieces should be swallowed but not crushed or chewed.

If you miss a dose of Losec in the morning, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next dose is due soon, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Consult your doctor before discontinuing the medication.

What Are the Doses of Losec?

Our medical expert can recommend the most suitable dosage for you, as there are several options available.

Losec is offered in both capsule and MUPS tablet forms, with dosages of 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg. These should be taken whole with water, though they can be dissolved in a non-fizzy liquid if necessary.

How Effective is Losec?

Losec proves to be highly successful in alleviating GORD symptoms, often showing effectiveness from the first dose.

It is recommended for long-term management of GORD, with most users experiencing only one or no recurrence of symptoms over a period of more than 10 years.

However, there are alternative tablets and capsules for managing GORD that do not employ the MUPS technology.
