Discharge Medicines Service

When you're ready to leave the hospital, you can take part in our discharge medicines service. This service puts you directly in touch with our branch pharmacist. We can then talk about your medicines directly with you.

Our pharmacist looks at all the medicines that you take. You can talk to them about:

  • Any new medicines that we gave you in hospital
Any changes that we made to your medicines during your hospital stay.
  • All of your medicines and how best to take them
Our pharmacist will explain what each medicine is for, any common side effects and how to take it safely.
  • You can ask our pharmacist any questions about your medicines and get all the information that you need.
How this service can help you

About half of all medicines are not taken as they are prescribed. Common errors include:

  • Taking the wrong dose (amount)
  • Taking the medicine at the wrong time
  • Not taking the medicine at all

If you do not take your medicines as prescribed, your condition is not treated correctly and could even get worse.

By understanding your medicines and the best way to take them, you can make sure that they help you as much as possible. Our pharmacist will support you to feel confident about managing your medicines at home. This is a free service and our pharmacist works closely with your GP.

Disposal of Unwanted Medicines

If you have out of date or unwanted medicines, both prescription or over the counter drugs, don't bin them or flush them. You can take your unwanted or out of date medicines back to your pharmacy for safe disposal, and it's completely free. We're very happy to help you.

It is not unusual to have out of date or unwanted medicines in your medical cabinets or first aid boxes at home. However, it is very important to ensure that these are disposed of safely.

Always read the leaflets accompanying your medicines for further advice.

You may take your unwanted or out of date medicines to your local Britannia Pharmacy where our staff will be happy to dispose them for you, using our DOOP service. The Environmental Agency regulates this service and collects such medicines from our pharmacies at regular intervals.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept chemicals or syringes and you should contact your local Council for assistance.

For information regarding the collection of medicines from Nursing and Residential Homes, please contact us directly.

Electronic Prescription Service

We are able to obtain your prescriptions electronically without the need for a paper copy. Simply ask your GP Surgery to nominate our pharmacy in order for your prescriptions to be transferred to us automatically. We can make your life much simpler and save you time.

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service.

The service allows your GP to send your prescription electronically from their computer to your chosen pharmacy.

What does this mean for you?
Using EPS means you don’t need a paper copy of your prescription. As it is sent by your GP electronically, you don’t need to collect the prescription from your GP in person. You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop. You may not have to wait as long at our pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be prepared before you arrive.

Why should I use EPS ?
Using EPS means you don’t have to visit your GP every time you need a new prescription.

Is EPS reliable, secure, and confidential?
Yes. Your electronic prescription will be seen by the same people in GP practices, pharmacies and NHS prescription payment and fraud agencies that see your current paper prescriptions.

Emergency Dispensing
Our emergency dispensing provides key information and also dispensing medication during emergencies, such as out of hours or pandemics. This crucial service ensures that patients have access to necessary medications when traditional pharmacies may be closed or inaccessible.

In the event that you require a repeat prescription medication in an emergency, outside your GP surgery hours, our pharmacist will assess your condition to determine whether there is an immediate need for the medication and whether you have previously been prescribed the medication by your GP.

For your protection, our pharmacist will only make an emergency supply in line with the Medicines and Ethics guidance and in some instances may decline a request for an emergency supply where it is not deemed necessary. In cases of uncertainty the pharmacist may direct you to your nearest hospital or Walk In Centre for assistance.

If you require medical assistance or advice outside our pharmacy hours you should contact your local police station or hospital.
You may also contact NHS UK on 111 or head to 111 online right now.
