Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid manages to get past the muscle ring at the bottom of the oesophagus and then moves into the oesophagus and throat.

The stomach generates acid to help break down food for digestion, produced by proton pumps in the stomach lining. However, these pumps can sometimes create too much acid, which then backs up into the oesophagus.

Lansoprazole works by inhibiting these proton pumps from making an excessive amount of acid. This prevention means that there's no surplus acid to move up into the oesophagus, thereby reducing heartburn and other symptoms linked to Acid Reflux and GORD.

Take the Lansoprazole capsule with a small amount of water. If swallowing the capsule is difficult, you can open it and mix its contents with apple or orange juice before swallowing the mixture. Avoid chewing the granules.

For administration via a nasogastric (NG) tube, open the capsule and combine its contents with about 40 millilitres of apple juice. Use no liquids other than apple juice for this. Introduce the mixture into the NG tube, following up with additional apple juice to ensure all the medication is flushed through the tube and reaches the patient’s stomach.

For Lansoprazole orally disintegrating tablets, carefully open the package without chewing, crushing, or breaking the tablet. Place it under your tongue. It can be taken with or without water. Allow the tablet to dissolve and then swallow the particles immediately.
