Mercilon: what is it?

Often referred to as a combination oral contraceptive pill or just the pill, Mercilon tablets are hormonal contraception. Its two active components are desogestrel, a synthetic progesterone derivative, and ethynylestradiol, a synthetic oestrogen.

Mercilon is a contraceptive pill. Menstrual bleeding becomes lighter, more regular, and less painful when the tablets are taken. Sometimes, doctors would administer mercilon to women who have painful, heavy, irregular periods.

How Does Mercilon Work?

The synthetic forms of progesterone and oestrogen, which are naturally occurring female sex hormones, are found in Mercilon tablets. Combination oral contraceptives, like Mercilon, function by interrupting the regular menstrual cycle. Every month during a woman's menstrual cycle, her sex hormone levels fluctuate. During ovulation, hormones trigger the ovaries to release an egg, preparing the lining of the womb for the potential of pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilised at the conclusion of each menstrual cycle, the hormone levels drop, which results in the monthly menstrual period—the shedding of the uterine lining.

Mercilon's daily hormone dose primarily fools the body into thinking ovulation has already taken place. By doing this, the ovaries are unable to mature and release an egg each month.

The natural mucus around the womb's neck thickens due to the hormones in Mercilon pills, which also makes it more difficult for sperm to get from the vagina into the womb and reach an egg for fertilisation. Additionally, the hormones alter the lining of the womb, making it less favourable for the implantation of a fertilised egg.

What advantages does taking Mercilon offer?

By stopping an egg from being released during the menstrual cycle, thickening the vaginal fluid to hinder sperm from reaching an egg, and altering the uterine lining to prevent a fertilised egg from attaching, mercilon tablets assist prevent pregnancy.

Mercilon also helps to reduce unpleasant periods, blood loss, and irregular menstruation. Mercilon aids in lowering the chance of ovarian cyst development.

How should I use Mercilon?

Mercilon is a monophasic medication, meaning that each tablet has the same amount of hormone.

Take one Mercilon tablet once a day for 21 days, interspersed with seven days off from taking pills. Hormone levels in the blood will fall during the one weak break from the pills, causing withdrawal bleeding that resembles your regular menstrual cycle. When the seven days without taking pills are up, begin the next Mercilon pack even if you are still bleeding.

To make it easier to remember that you must take the tablets every day for the following three weeks, followed by a week off, they come in a calendar pack with the days of the week marked. As long as you take all of the pills as prescribed and begin taking the following packet of medications on schedule, you will remain protected from getting pregnant throughout the pill-free week.

Take the pill at the same time every day to help you remember to take it. Each Mercilon pill should be taken with a glass of water. Mercilon can be taken with or without food.

As soon as your monthly cycle begins, you should begin taking the pill as a preventative measure against pregnancy. Mercilon does not require the use of any other kind of birth control. Starting the pill on the fifth day of your period won't protect you against pregnancy if your menstrual cycle is really short.

If the doctor is quite certain that you are not pregnant, you can begin taking this medication at any point during your cycle. Any other point in your cycle will not prevent you from becoming pregnant if you start the pill. For the first seven days after starting the pill, you may need to utilise additional types of contraception, including a condom.

The 21st day after giving birth is when you can begin taking the pill if you are not breastfeeding. For the first seven days, use additional birth control, such as a condom.

You will be protected against after-mature miscarriages and abortions by starting the pill as soon as possible. Pregnancy. For the first seven days after starting the pill, more than seven days after an abortion or miscarriage, you should take additional contraception.

Even if you have to take two pills at once, take the missing pill as soon as you remember if you start the pack of pills one day later or forget to take a pill. Then, proceed with taking the remaining pack in the prescribed order. You don't need to use additional contraception because you are still protected against getting pregnant.

You will not be prevented from getting pregnant if you skip a dose or begin the new pack more than two days later. Take both the daily dose and the previous medication you skipped for a total of two pills to take. Don't think about the other medication you overlooked. Next, take the remaining Mercilon pills from the pack according to the prescribed dosage. You shouldn't engage in sexual activity or use condoms or other extra-barrier methods of contraception.

When you finish the Mercilon pack and begin a new pack without taking the seven-day pill-free days, if there are fewer than seven pills left in the pack after your final missed pill.

The medication might not enter your bloodstream completely if you throw up two hours after taking it. As soon as you start to feel better, take another medication, and then take the next one at the scheduled time. Pregnancy prevention will still apply to you.

There is no sexually transmitted infection protection provided by Mercilon. Condom use is essential if you want to avoid contracting an STD.

When using Mercilon for the first time, women may have menstrual irregularities like spotting, breakthrough bleeding, or missing periods. In the event that your bleeding is ongoing, see your physician. Use a test to confirm that you are not pregnant before beginning the following month's contraceptive cycle if you have not shed blood for two consecutive months.
